The first half of this course will cover the role a paralegal plays in a law practice as well as the ethical and legal constraints paralegals must be aware of when dealing directly with clients. Topics will include client interview, file set-up and maintenance, deadline diary systems and general organizational systems. The student should learn what a paralegal's role is in a law firm as well as the basic tasks performed by paralegals and the skill set necessary to be a successful paralegal. The student will be asked to participate in a mock client interview and will prepare a memo following the interview for the attorney outlining the key and relevant facts presented by the prospective client. The second half of the course will focus on an introduction to Civil Practice and Procedure. Topics that will be covered will include a general overview of the Georgia civil judicial system and the different types of legal pleadings that paralegal's are expected to be familiar with and be able to prepare in draft form for the attorney. By the end of the course, the student should have a general understanding of the Georgia Civil Practice Act and be familiar with basic civil pleading practice. (No text is required.
